Addressed to the Army of Culture Penguins
BLIZZARD, Shamrock Bulletin Headquarters – Welcome to Cultural Compass! In this column we will be exploring different traditions from all around the world. Today’s edition includes the tradition ‘Almabtrieb’. Let’s dive into it!
The tradition is called Almabtrieb, but it has different names in the different countries it takes place, like Alpabzug in Switzerland. Almabtrieb is an annual event in the alpine regions in Europe. Every spring cattle is herded to the alpine mountains, while during September they’re herded back to their farm. While the trip back to their farm is going on, the cattle is often decorated with bright colored decorations making it a unique thing to watch.
During Almabtrieb the farmers are wearing traditional clothing in order to fit in with the cattle and their decorations. Around the route the cattle goes through, there are different stalls set up with local food, clothing and much more! This makes it a perfect occasion to catch up with friends and to enjoy your day.
To finish this post off, we arranged a post with one of our troops: Soringel! Let’s see what they had to say about this tradition.
Welcome to this interview, Soringel! I wanted to ask you if you have ever seen Almabtrieb? And what was it like?
Would this end if i said no?
But yes i did, and its quite gun
Well so I did see it a couple of times, more by accident than a planned visit, as I don’t live close enough to anywhere where that happens and its not important enough for me to see. If I‘m close though its something i like to spend a couple of hours on
Ooooo! I see. If you could describe the tradition in one word? What would it be and why?
Zany, yes I had to look it up, cause its the closest translation to a german word that immediately popped into my mind. The whole event is absolutely bizarre and funny in a nice way. Well the tradition is, the accompanying party is a blast.
Oooooh, I see. That’s an interesting choice. If someone would be going to an area that celebrates it, would you recommend it to them?
Definetly, you’d have to be lucky though as it is once a year and I don‘t think its worth planning an entire trip around it, well unless you are super into discovering that stuff.
Ahh, that’s a valid thing to say tbh. Planning a trip around it might not be as easy. What is the part you like the most about it?
The party and celebration. The food, drink and dance where everyone and their mother comes out to have some fun and mingle. A lot of the older snd some hardcore younger people, dress up in traditional garbs and dance and play music. Both of the traditional kind of course, but its one of the last events that brings this out.
Ooohhhh, that actually sounds very fun :] ! Thank you for this interview btw! Is there anything you’d like to add?
Mhh no, dont think so,
Thank you once again for this interview and sharing more about this tradition! Almabtrieb sounds indeed like a very social and fun event. Thank you guys for reading this edition of Cultural Compass!
What did YOU think of today’s edition? Would you visit it yourself? Let us know in the comments below!
