Debate of the Week: Soccer or Football

Nice Pen, John! (Not)

Hai ACP,

From now on, every Thursday will be the “Debate of the Week” day. As you can see, this weeks debate is about the name of the game of Football! Do I mean soccer, or football? In the USA and South America they call it Soccer and it is a big sport in Brazil and Argentina, with greats like Pele and Maradona coming from these two countries. In most of the world it is called Football, particularly in Europe where they have the Champions League which was won by Chelsea last year. In 2008, Terry’s penalty failed to win the Champions League and eventually Anelka’s miss meant that Man United won it. However, this debate is about what it is called and what I we should all call it.

SOCCER or FOOTBALL

My Opinion: Football, because you use your foot and a ball. What does soccer even mean? Come on, that name just sounds made up ;).

COMMENT IN THE DEBATE!

Football. You yanks need to learn that your football is handegg.

  3. I don’t really care to be honest. People can call it what they want and I’m glad I’ve got people to talk about the beautiful game with.

What annoys me is people on youtube (and here) who rip into Americans for calling football “soccer” and paradoxically rip into them for being american and saying they have no right to like football. They annoy me.

  4. Football was what the sport was originally called, so football IMO. The Americans have wanted to be independent from us language-wise every since the War of Independence, and so introduced new ways to spell words, new ways to pronounce words and even new terms describing words so if they want to be like that then that is okay.

  5. WE’VE ALREADY HAD THIS DEBATE, ANT DID ONE, NOW GET IT OFF THE SITE AND MAKE AN F1 DEBATE TYVM.

      1. BOO YOU, I HEREBY COUP YOU

  6. Football hurr durr. Why did we have to copy the Yanks and call it soccer. Football makes more sense.

Football kinda makes sense, but Americans have that game where people run with a brown ball and try to score points in an endzone and not a goalnet that’s called football

  11. NACHOS DERP WOW EASY CHOICE

  12. Association football is the official way of calling what the americans term as “soccer”. Soccer is a commonly known “slang” name that North and Latin America use. American football is used as football, though infact the real term for this is football. The two sports conflicted and there ended up one day to be a debate on the Army of Club Penguin website.

  13. MY GOD IS THERE ANYONE HERE THAT A FRICKIN AMERICAN?????

  14. Soccer. I have no idea where we got it from xD but if we were to call it football it would be messed up with american football. Depends on where you live xD
