Internet Safety

Slider: I’m still waiting to be added back to the ACPTR site.

Hello ACP!

Today I’d like you all to give me a moment of seriousness and take everything I say seriously because this is for your good. Today I went on ACP chat and talked with someone. We talked about our towns (not saying anything detailed really) and then he/she tells me way too much, even the name. This person trusts me and I won’t revile anything about him/her to anyone (so don’t ask me in comments or on xat) or anything they said because of this there won’t be any xat example pictures and this will be the only time I mention this instance and like I said they have a right to their privacy.

We all leave a digital footprint in some way but how big and detailed it is can be up to you. Theres not really a way to be 100% safe unless you’re willing to stop using the internet but there are ways to keep you safer. First I’d like to talk about Facebook. If you haven’t notice you can search anyone’s name and get them. Theres even programs to get around their “safety features” and all you need is a simple password. If you don’t believe me take a look below.

Google it for yourself. This happens all the time on Facebook and quite a lot believe it or not. So what can you do if you’re addicted to Facebook? Well don’t put your currant home on it, they even give you a google map if someone wanted to go to your house and don’t tell everyone about your school and where you go to school. People can dox you and get your name. Then with that they can find you on Facebook and give your location out to random strangers. Same goes with Twitter. Would it hurt if you didn’t tweet where you’re going to every minute so a stalker didn’t get to you? I didn’t think so.

Again, all I had to do is put in a few keywords, and BAM! If this one doesn’t work theres hundreds that might. Not so good when it is put like that is it? I hope that someone is looking into this stuff because if I can find it on google, and I’m no internet master that they are too. Again these programs might be on google but Facebook might have found and fixed the new problem but no promises.

On chats the game is different. If someone seems to be getting more personal in questions then maybe you need to casually cut off the convo. This might just be your gut making you do something unnecessary but it’s nice to feel safe than think you might have just acquired a stalker. If they’re a good friend on xat then they should no not to get too personal and if you tell them personal things about you lets hope they’re really good friends. Not saying everyone on xat is crazy (I doubt most of them are) but you never know.

It’s helpful not to tell the entire chat where you live or give them pictures of you and tell them your name. State or country is up to you but don’t specificity where (ex: I live in upstate New York) if you said something like that then you’re letting people get closer to you than you might want.

A proxy might be helpful to start using. It’s really helpful to hackers if you don’t use one. They’ll take your IP address from your computer over the internet. What a proxy does it make a fake IP address for you and when you search with it the website logs you as IP 2.2.2.2.2 rather than 1.1.1.1.1.1. Some good free Proxy websites are here http://compnetworking.about.com/od/proxyserversandlists/tp/anonymousproxy.htm. Also if you have a anti virus program  that offers identity protection that helps too.

I hope you found this post helpful and will rethink the way you surf the web and that you take this seriously because this is a real thing I’m talking about. If you also have some internet safety tips be sure to comment telling me them and I’ll put them here on the post.

  7. Good post Slider!

  8. Nice post. Maybe I should post less about my location in Facebook.

  9. I think this is a good post, but it’s only in places like armies where things like this apply. I’ve been in a lot of communities, and out of all of them, the CP armies commmunity is the one most notorious for hackers. Proxies are good, but in my opinion the best one is Psiphon3. You can set it to SSH+, SSH or even VPN; I use it to proxy around my school firewall. Definitely some solid advice given in this post though, nice one 🙂

  10. Good post, and a big issue that we all need reminding about.

  11. internet safety is number one for everyone.
