Hey ACP!

Today I decided I wanted to tell you about the NATO Phonetic Alphabet. I know this is not related to ACP or Club Penguin in any way but I want share this with you guys. 😛 

The NATO Phonetic Alphabet is the most widely used spelling alphabet. It was developed by  the International Civil Aviation Organization and has been adopted by many organizations such as:

  • International Telecommunication Union
  • American Radio Relay League
Here’s a chart:
As you can see, most of our Divisions have names that are in this chart, such as: Alfa(or Alpha), Delta, and Echo (I guess this makes this kinda related to ACP right? :P).
Now, Why do people use this?
A spelling alphabet is used to spell parts of a message containing letters and numbers to avoid confusion, because many letters sound similar, example: “n” and “m” or “b” and “d”. The message “proceed to map grid DH98” could be transmitted as “proceed to map grid Delta-Hotel-Niner-Ait”. Using “Delta” instead of “D” avoids confusion between “BH98” and “DH98”. The unusual pronunciation of certain numbers was designed to reduce confusion.
So if I wanted to write “Johny 4” using this method, it would appear as “Juliet Oscar Hotel November Yankee Four”. You have to look at the first letter of every word. Other examples are:
  • Ken = Kilo Echo November
  • Flipper = Foxtrot Lima Papa Papa Echo Romeo
