Auto Typing: Is it Hacking?

Stev: I just want to thank the Nachos for the opportunity of a great PB earlier today. We were all bored so I PC’ed Linkin and asked if we could have a PB for fun. So Yeah, thanks Nachos, that was a nice fight. We both retaliated nicely, thanks for the opportunity.

Please do not forget about Congress Elections!!

To clarify (for those who didn’t know): Auto typers allow you to define a certain number of phrases that you pre-enter. You can then leave your penguin alone and it will automatically and repeatedly comment these phrases. Whether hacking or not, it is giving any army that uses it an advantage in both recruiting and battle. It is an outside program that allows you to do something Club Penguin does not normally allow (by many definitions: hacking).

There has been a lot of talk going around about whether or not Auto Typing is legal based on the Anti-Bot Bill. It is pretty much accepted that it is an unfair advantage in battle, but what about in other cases?

The problem with only making it not allowed in battles is that it makes it available for recruiting. Based on something Person said in response to Shab, the bill was designed to prevent unfair advantages of hacking or cheating armies.

Here is an example of a similar question with a definite answer: a baseball player uses steriods to make themselves stronger during the offseason but stops just in time for the real games to start. Did he still use steriods? Yes. Did he give himself an unfair advantage? Yes. Basically, using auto-typer to recruit is the same as using steriods to make yourself stronger. You may not be using the auto typer in battle, but the recruits you gained using the auto typer will be in the battle. Without auto typer, would you have gained those recruits? Maybe some of them. But by using auto typer, you have given yourself an advantage over armies who try to recruit the right way. To me, it’s still unfair.

As an example, any small army with an auto-typer now has an extreme advantage recruiting-wise over other small armies.

“Using an autotyper and leaving a penguin hooked up to it saying “search *insert army here*” is an amazing way to recruit for a small army.”

~Person1233

“Auto typing is a great way to recruit :s”

So is it hacking? I did some research, and my first point came from Crime-Research.org. Hacking is defined as “unauthorized use of computer and network resources”. Think of it this way. Without the use of an outside program, does Club Penguin allow you to send messages automatically and repeatedly? No. It is therefore not a natural “use of computer and network resources [i.e. Club Penguin]”. If you cannot do it naturally, it is unauthorized. You are using a program that breaks code in Club Penguin to allow you to do something you could not normally. By any definition that is hacking, and it is illegal. Likewise, using Penguin Storm or any other program that allows you to do something that is not normally possible is hacking. Plain and simple.

If you need more evidence, maybe the fact that auto typer was featured in a February post on the blog called Google Hacking 2008 will sway you. And yes, auto typer is also a hack for Runescape.

Put simply, if you asked Club Penguin what they thought of these programs that let someone take advantage of their game, I guarantee they will say that it is unfair, and if they knew who you were, you might even get banned. It happens all the time to anyone who makes a Youtube video involving these types of things. Most of you know this is an unfair advantage, but won’t admit it for your own selfish reasons. It’s quite obvious to me anyone would like to use this for recruiting, but what is right and what is easy are two completely different things.

We’ve recently been talking about bringing back the “Golden Ages” of Club Penguin armies. These auto typing programs had never been an issue back then (and I don’t think they even existed) and they hadn’t even been used until just recently. For the integrity of armies, we need to keep all forms of hacking, and anything that gives you an unfair advantage, out of armies. If we allow this type of program in armies at all, it will become a race for who can recruit the most soldiers with auto typer. Say goodbye to true recruiting sessions, hard work, and loyal soldiers. Think of the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. “I’m not going to worry about making my country a better place, I’m just going to see how many nuclear weapons I can make.” If all it takes is a few penguins with auto typer to build an army, then I refuse to be a part of it. I can’t be the spokesperson for the older army generation any more. I need other people to stand up with me and say “this is not how armies are supposed to be.” We should not be about trying to find loopholes in all the old rules, we should not be about trying to find the easy way out.

There’s a reason almost all the major armies that were around when I joined have fallen. We have all gotten lazy. You think about recruiting sessions, practices battles. Those barely ever happened back then. But somehow it wasn’t a problem. Why? Leaders and their soldiers were on Club Penguin every single day, battle or not, time of peace, time of war. At some point after I joined, and all the original generation leaders had retired, leaders stopped enforcing this behavior. Now, few soldiers had the motivation to be on Club Penguin that much, and the mentality of constantly working to improve your army was gone. By the time I became leader, I was well aware of this fundamental difference in the soldier’s mentality. At that point, it was basically irreversable. I did what I could, creating Brigades like the ones Oagal used to have, hoping it would encourage patrolling and activeness on Club Penguin. Armies before and after me did similar things with Branches (Air Force, Navy, Marines) but it never caught on. The only thing left that could replace the activeness soldiers used to maintain by themselves were practice battles. If you have seen ACP or the Nachos as another example, we are the only major armies left that have gained ground rather than lost it. We are basically the only two armies that have regular practice battles.

If I could give some advice to this current generation of leaders, it would be this. Work hard, both you and your army. Armies have already lost a lot of the mystique they used to have. Maybe it’s because everything now is about hacking. “The Golds hack, declare war.” Between the Nachos and Golds, that war was almost entirely pictures back and forth of the other side “hacking”. The Nachos claimed the Golds were hacking in nearly every post. The Golds came up with a picture of the Nachos “hacking”, which was denied, sparking this whole debate of what constitutates “hacking”. You know what? Who’s to say what is and isn’t hacking? If we defined hacking as a way to gain an unfair advantage, we wouldn’t even have this issue. We’re the Golds hacking? Yes. We’re the Nachos hacking? Yes. There would be no questions asked over what constitutes hacking, there would be no argument over auto typers, I would not have had to write this post, and you would not have had to read it.

If you agree that something must be done about this, please go to The Club Penguin Army Council website and say what you think in a comment. Because it’s obvious to me that we need to fix this somehow, some way. We need to work together on this, to put all forms of hacking behind us, before we can begin our work in restoring Club Penguin armies to their Golden Age.

*or mabey even to be —EDITOR—*

  8. I say don’t use it in battles and such, but in recruiting.

  9. boomer i agree
i controlled a few small armies a while ago and your right they have all gotten lazy, the troops used to enjoy being in an army big or small but now, now, just sad.
armies should just be fair and fun not hacking and lazy i will post this at the link you specified also.

  10. Before Personal Computers and the World Wide Web were around, hacking meant to make something better.

  11. Boomer I agree with everything you put in your post!

  12. I saw some of the Roman Fire Warriors using Auto typer to recruit. That is unfair

  13. Jesus, I can’t believe you guys are still on this topic. I mean, sriously now.

  14. auto typers are hacking, duh

  15. I agree Boomer, it’s hacking! I don’t understand if people want to get back to the Golden Ages, but are hacking. We never did that back then. It makes me mad!

  16. im new and all but hacking dude thats rong man
im with u on that Mchappy2

  17. I request a change of polls

  18. […] Auto Typing: Is it Hacking? Posted on June 14, 2009 by Boomer 20 […]

  19. Well, just to verify with ACP soldiers, if the law is instated AFTER it takes place you cannot take them to court.

  20. Hacking was made illegal by U.S. governments a long time ago. xD

  21. Well Boomer, Autotyping is merely a macro, and a mcro is just something that does the same the for you. So I dont think it should be considered hacking.

  22. Sir, I have had alot of fun and l gained alot of experience from my many months in ACP but I am now retiring from clubpenguin with a heavy heart. It has been great working under your command, Boomer. And, Saint, I know you will be a great leader. If you will so kindly take me off the ranks page since I will not be coming back.

  23. How about a rule you can’t use autoype 2 hours before battle to prevent noobish recruits from helping you at battles.

  24. interesting…….

  25. first of all, can i get a link to this anti-bot bill? because ive never actually SEEN it. and second, just because its not there doesnt mean its unauthorized.

  26. although i still dont support auto-typers. i hate almost all hacking. except ive always thought it would be cool to get a hundred spam bots and take over a server all by myself XD. but i probably wouldnt do it.

  27. and one other thing from me. boomer, you werent even AROUND for the high part of the golden ages. i mean, you were around for the remnants, aka the Low Golden Ages, but WWIII and the age before nations, that is what im getting at here.

  28. I agree,it’s hacking. I hope all soldiers from all armies can stop this so we can bring a golden age back 🙂

  29. and another thing, http://poll.pollcode.com/bcA

  30. I found a better way than using the auto talker. You type in the message, highlight it, right click, click on copy, then hit enter, then, right click the inside of the chat bar and press paste. Do this over and over. It works better than the auto talker and is perfectly legal / not hacking. I always do this and it wrks so much better.

  31. if they dont want another golden age,
i just dont understand why we dont make a NEW army of our own, besides not being loyal to acp, it seems like a pretty good idea. What soldier in the usa would keep fighting if he knew his side was destroying villages for example, NO ONE WOULD! This issue has destroyed the ACP and we should either talk to club penguin and get it banned or make a new site.

Go to google and search “haho4.wordpress.com” awesome army forming- first to join get higher ranks or even author or editor.

  32. Boomer, this is a very controversial problem. On one hand, it is very useful to use in battles and recruiting. Although I believe it is wrong. If we use Auto Typer, We will grow in size, but diminish. Ninjas will invade because we’ve become too lazy to stop them. ACP will fall like a stone as we become more and more lazy.

  33. haho, you’re dilusanal. All of us are loyal to ACP. And what in the BLUE BLAZES does destroying villages have to do with this?

  34. (XD) I think people do tihs because they find it boring to recruit. You don’t earn many recruits by a armored up penguin saying “SEARCH ACP ARMY OF CLUB PENGUIN ON GOO GUL” a few times. If there’s a completely nude penguin saying “SEARCH (insert blah here)” I’m going to be more likely to search it, IMO.

  35. autotyping is a great way to recruit its not hacking

  36. tell me the url of the comment and i can track the penguin and baann him forever or as long as you want I know somone who works for cp so I know how to get them banned I will not do it without saint 119’s permision though

    ~jakesyl

  37. Jakesyl. Are you referring to me? Rofl.

  38. ._. wow thatz…thatz alot of…. evendince.. nice v.v [[[ i knoe meh spellin stinks… i get it from meh friend lolz no meh dad!]]]

  39. If you really want my opinion (which half of the penguins in ACP probably dont 😐 ) I think if your army uses autotyper, you should have twice as many drills and PBs than a normal army would, so things don’t get lazy in your army. And although I support Autotyper if you do what i said, I beleive it is totally wrong and a bad way of getting publicity fro your army. Maybe the Anti-Bot Bill should be rewritten (only the recruiting part) so Autotyper is allowed, but only if the army using it has twice (preferably three times) as many battles, drills, and PBs than armies would normally have. But that’s just my opinion 🙂

  40. I do think it is a good way to recruit, but still, the ACP rulebook says to follow all CP rules including the one about NO HACKING.
    -Sgt. Tobymac96

  41. Oh yeah, I was at that PB. I just showed up on chat and it said “Go to Breeze” (XD)

  42. Hey join Death Fighters they are far more superior than army of clubpenguin
we are also the ones who have been attacking you guys

  43. Hm, makes sense. I like your form of writing, its different, in a good way.
