I had been thinking about adding a sort of motto, a statement for why ACP is here, for a few months now. As I see my time running out, I will be doing everything I can to make ACP the best it can be. If you haven’t heard yet, I will be retiring in under a week. I honestly do not believe my time is up, but sometimes you just have to listen to those whose opinions matter more than your own…
These lyrics are some of my favorites, and I feel it matches our purpose well. Please pay close attention to the message. Mere words never meant so much as these did to me. It is a message that I have always tried to stand by both as a soldier and as a leader. I hope you do too.

This song was written for a play called “Man of La Mancha.” It is a story about an old man named Don Quixote, who is working to become a knight. He acts very noble and couragous, but because of his age and the way he acts, he gets made fun of. He is trying to get a woman whom he calls “Dulcinea”, meaning something like “sweet lady”, to be his lady (every knight needs a lady). She thinks he is crazy too, but he is persistent. He treats her like a lady when she is in fact a poor maid. She asks him why he does such ridiculous things, and his response is this song. From that point on, he seems to have won her over. At the end of the play, he lays dying, and is unable to remember anything about being a knight or his friendships with his sidekick Sancho and with Dulcinea. Sancho is trying to get him to remember, but Don Quixote appears to be dying. Dulcinea arrives and sings him the same song he sang to her. He begins to remember, and he, Sancho, and Dulcinea sing together. Suddenly, Don Quixote dies. The play has a happy ending despite his death, as Don Quixote died happily, remembering his quest and all that he had done. Later, the townspeople sing the same song to mourn his passing. It is considered one of the most moving songs of all time. All the comments are from people saying they were crying while watching it, and I have to admit I have teared up a bit…
